COMMON ELIGIBILITY TEST (CET) - ONE EXAM FOR ALL GOVERNMENT JOBS

In order to promote the transparency in govt. exams this has been proposed in Rajya Sabha on 14th March 2018, that a Common Eligibility Test (CET) will be conducted for govt exams viz SSC, Banking, Railway and others from 2019 onward.

This exam will be conducted for the recruitment of vacancies of Group ‘B’ (Non-Gazetted) and below level posts in the Government of India. There is going to be one portal for
registration of every kind of exam i.e SSC, Banking, Railway etc. The portal going to be developed by National Career Services (NCS) of the Ministry of Labour & Employment.
CET will be conducted by SSC and SSC's stature should be given autonomy at par with the UPSC (recommended by the committee under the chairmanship of Shri I.M.G Khan).

Reason for conducting CET

The details provided by the planning commission says that the commission has canceled 9 exams either partially or completely in past 5 years. Such cancellation of exams is a complete waste of time and resources of both the aspirants and the Government. Also, the reputation of SSC has fallen in the eyes of the public. So for solving all these problems govt. has decided to conduct one common exam for all kind exams.

Selection Process of CET

The selection process of the exam is mainly divided into two stages:
(i) Tier- I: This stage of the exam is a common screening test combining all the preliminary examinations of tier- I conducted by all recruiting agencies of the government of India viz. SSC, Bank and Railways etc.
(ii) Tier- II: The main examinations will be conducted by the concerned recruiting agency.

CET will be conducted at three levels:
(i) Graduate Level,
(ii) Intermediate Level (+2)
(iii) and Matriculate Level.

Note: But for the year 2019 only graduate-level CET exam will be conducted.
This exam will be conducted only in English and Hindi medium for the year 2019. Other CET level exams will be conducted when the commission acquires the necessary capability.

Exam Date

As per the press release by the Govt. the exam will be conducted in the month of February 2019.

Advantages of CET:

  • CET is going to reduce the number of exams conducted by various government agencies and will save the significant amount of money spent by the agencies in conducting exams.
  • In future CET score may be accepted by state Government, Public sector undertaking and Private sector companies for shortlisting the candidates for employing them.
  • CET score will be valid for two years.
  • If you qualify this CET then you will be directly eligible for the 2nd stage of all exams i.e SSC, Banking and Railways.
  • This will reduce the number of exams for the students in various govt. exams.

Disadvantages of CET:

  • The exam is being conducted only in English and Hindi which is a huge drawback for the students who are preparing in another regional language.
